Cara mengupas buah siwalan sangat mudah dan simpel, tidak perlu dibakar kulit buahnya seperti kolang kaling. Buah cukup dikupas sampai kelihatan daging buahnya. Daging buah ini bisa langsung dimakan tanpa perlu direbus dan dan direndam di air kapur. Tekstur daging siwalan lebih lembut dan kenyal, berbeda dengan daging buah kolang kaling yang agak padat dan keras.
